The Eau Claire Advantage (continued)
- The Department also participates with the Department of Mathematics
in awarding approximately 30 EMACS scholarships to new freshmen or currently
enrolled students who major in mathematics, computer science, computer
engineering, or software engineering, and who demonstrate financial
need and academic potential. These are also full tuition scholarships.
- The Department maintains three state-of-the-art computer labs specifically
dedicated to students in computer science. The Software Design Lab (funded
by a special State of Wisconsin budget initiative) and the Computer
Security Lab (funded by the National Science Foundation) are uniquely
designed computing facilities unlike any others in the region.
- The Department offers four distinct majors to choose from:
- Computer Science: a comprehensive (61 credit) major
with substantial coursework in software engineering and database systems,
computer hardware and operating systems, and computer networks. This
program is nationally accredited by ABET-CAC.
- Computer Engineering: a comprehensive (70 credit)
major with substantial coursework in computer organization and design,
electronics and digital systems, microcontroller systems, operating
systems, and computer networks.
- Computer Science: Software Engineering: a standard
(38 credit) major with a focus on software design and development
intended for students wishing to become professional software engineers.
- Geographic Information Systems: a comprehensive
(60 credit) major combining interdisciplinary work in Computer Science
and Geography with a focus on computer based mapping techniques and
spatial analysis.
- Coursework in CS stresses Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) using both Java and C++,
and using both Windows XP and Linux computer systems. All courses are taught by full-time
faculty with graduate degrees in computer science
