The Eau Claire Advantage (continued)

  • UW - Eau Claire is the Center for Excellence in Faculty/Student Collaborative Research within the University of Wisconsin System. Several students each year participate in student/faculty research projects in Computer Science, and many present their work at conferences and through publications in refereed journals.
  • The Department of Computer Science supports a very active internship program with local industry partners. Internships provide job experience, a paycheck, and up to six college credits. More than half of all CS students complete an internship prior to graduation.
  • The Department is active in developing innovative programs and courses for students interested in applying computer science to other disciplines. Two of these programs are:
  • Computational Science: the application of computational problem solving techniques to the sciences and mathematics. At a recent conference of undergraduate institutions with new and developing computational science (CPSC) programs, UWEC was identified as having the best overall interdisciplinary structure and most complete institutional support for CPSC. Computer Science plays a significant role in this interdisciplinary minor, both in teaching the core courses and in providing the computational support.
  • Web Design and Development: the application of computational analysis and design in the development of sophisticated Internet applications, including design principles taught in courses offered by the Departments of Art, Journalism, and English. This is yet another interdisciplinary minor with steadily increasing student enrollments meeting a major industrial need.
  • The Computer Science program is demanding but current and practical. We stress quality over quantity by providing an aggressive and intensive program designed to produce a distinguished pool of high quality graduates. The exposure to current practical applications, taken from both industry and research, accounts for much of the Department's reputation as a demanding but highly regarded program. Recent top graduates from Eau Claire receive "signing bonuses" of $3000-$5000 on top of a base annual salary in the range of $45000-$55000 and nearly a 100% job placement rate. That is the Eau Claire advantage!
